We recently returned from a fabulous trip to NYC (recap and pics coming as soon as I find the time!). Josie as been to the city 5 or 6 times now - the exact amount of times that I have been since my first trip was not until she was 8 months old - and so she has developed a pretty good feel for the city and its differences from our "small town" of Richmond. Today, we were driving to our local Target and we passed a highrise that we drive by at least twice a day. Our most recent trip must have really registered to her and she did a really good job of putting it into words:
Josie: Mama! Look at that really tall building! It is way taller than our house!
Me: Yes, it is a tall building.
Josie: There are lots of really tall buildings in New York.
Me: You are right, New York has many tall buildings, but other cities have tall buildings too.
Josie (not really getting what I am saying and still staring, dumbfounded at the highrise): New York has really tall buildings. We just have short buildings.
Ahhh, the mind of a child trying to make sense of the world. Or maybe I can put an educational spin on this: comparing and contrasting skills at their best! :-)
