Daddy's New Truck

After 2 months of searching, comparing, and driving - not to mention countless hours of researching - daddy has finally purchased a new (used) truck! Daddy is happy and Josie is pretty excited, too!

She can use the cover as a dance floor:

Question of the Day

Josie: "Mama, where does throw up come from?"

Me, hesitating, caught off guard and trying to buy time: "Um, what do you mean, where does throw up come from?"

(As a side note before the punchline: my child has only thrown up two or three times ever, the last time at least a year ago.)

Josie: "Well the one time I threw up it had little stuff in it and it looked like chicken."

New York City

Some really good friends live in NYC and Josie and I (and Tim on a few occasions) have been lucky enough to get to take advantage of their generosity and hospitality quite a few times over the past 3 years. Josie talks about the trips for weeks prior and weeks after. She loves the public transportation we usually take to get there (trains, planes, and buses)! She loves the subway and "really tall" buildings. Mostly, though, I think she loves visiting her buddy Colman (who is the same age as her) and his little brother Blake.

Our last trip was no exception. My friends have made the decision to leave the city by the end of the year and raise their ever-growing family closer to where we grew up. I am excited for them to be able to afford to buy a house and purchase milk for less than $6, but I am sad we won't have the wonderful 'home' feel for future visits as we will have to stay in a box-sized hotel versus a comfortable two-bedroom apartment. So, several of our college classmates decided it was time for a group trip to the city.

The weather was lousy - it POURED pretty much the entire time we were there. While it put a damper on our plans of walking, walking, walking, it didn't damper our spirits. We still had a wonderful time hanging out, catching up, watching the kids reunite, and trudging our way around the (wet) city - mostly via public transportation (did I mention the 45 mph winds?!?!).

Our trip, in pictures (well, some of it as I didn't take the camera out in the rain too much!):

Waiting for our train in Philly (they look pretty chipper for 6-something in the morning!):

Day 1: While Tara stood in line in the pouring rain to score us some tickets to Fela, Tim, Kelly and I took the kiddos to Toys R Us to enjoy a ride on the big ferris wheel:

On Saturday, during the torrential downpours and 45 mph winds, we decided to check out the Museum of Natural History. While it was crowded beyond belief (understandably), the kids still loved it. The dinosaurs were a hit:

Josie even thought she was funny and tried the "look like you are holding the dinosaur" trick:

The rain let up, a little bit, Saturday early evening. So, while Jeff stayed home and slaved over a hot stove (thanks for the yummy meal, Jeff!), the rest of the group shuffled our way down to Times Square to get a touristy event under our belts!

After dinner, we had a mini-celebration for Tim's birthday with a huge, yummy cupcake from Crumbs Bakery:

Due to a last minute trip and a complete stroke of luck, we shared a train ride back to Philly with most of our friends (including our hosts who were heading out on a trip of their own). So, Josie and Colman got to hang out a little bit longer. Aren't they adorable?!? :

What a great trip and fun with such good friends! Thank you, again, Tara and Jeff, for being ever-gracious hosts!

The Mind of a Preschooler

We recently returned from a fabulous trip to NYC (recap and pics coming as soon as I find the time!). Josie as been to the city 5 or 6 times now - the exact amount of times that I have been since my first trip was not until she was 8 months old - and so she has developed a pretty good feel for the city and its differences from our "small town" of Richmond. Today, we were driving to our local Target and we passed a highrise that we drive by at least twice a day. Our most recent trip must have really registered to her and she did a really good job of putting it into words:

Josie: Mama! Look at that really tall building! It is way taller than our house!
Me: Yes, it is a tall building.
Josie: There are lots of really tall buildings in New York.
Me: You are right, New York has many tall buildings, but other cities have tall buildings too.
Josie (not really getting what I am saying and still staring, dumbfounded at the highrise): New York has really tall buildings. We just have short buildings.

Ahhh, the mind of a child trying to make sense of the world. Or maybe I can put an educational spin on this: comparing and contrasting skills at their best! :-)

Cute Quote of the Day

Yesterday Josie was playing and ran up to me with binoculars up to her eyes:

"Mama, look at me, I'm binoculing and seeing lots of stuff!"

Ice Skating

Ever since Josie saw a little boy ice skating on a Nick Jr. 'commercial' in November, she has been asking me to take her ice skating. Although I had agreed to it, I really didn't think my 3-year-old would enjoy the event, so I have continually put it off. Then, a few weeks ago, out of the blue, a friend of ours invited us to go ice skating. I decided it was a sign and agreed that we would try it out. Results? I am so glad we went! Josie thought it was about the best thing that has ever happened to her and keeps begging to go back. And, even though my back and legs were sore for a few days from all of the bending to hold on to her and to pick her up when she fell, I had a wonderful time, too!

Sled Riding

Thanks to Richmond's crazy, snow-filled winter, Josie was able to get her first taste of sled riding a few weeks ago. She was beyond excited to try out this new sport!

Josie and her friend J ready to let the fun begin!

After some fun tandem riding, Josie decided to try her hand at solo sledding:

The landing wasn't perfect, but the ride sure was fun!

Needless to say, if Richmond ever has another snowy winter, Josie will be thrilled to go sledding again! Thanks J and J for joining us in the fun!
